Racing at the Sachsenring began in 1927, and it went on to become one of the classic European pre-war race circuits. Racing commenced again in 1949 until 1973 when international races ceased. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, one final race on the old town circuit was held before the track closed due to safety concerns. In 1995/96 a modernised and shortened track was opened and since 1999, the German GP has been held at the Sachsenring.

The track is located in the east of Germany in the Hohenstein-Ernsttha region, south of Leipzeig and to the west of Chemnitz
