Monza was built and opened in 1922, set in wooded parkland and is Europe's oldest permanent racing circuit. Monza was a fast slipstreaming track that originally included a notoriously bumpy banked oval section. The circuit has had a grisly history with a number of accidents involving spectators and many riders and drivers have also lost their lives here. Speeds have progressively been reduced over the years on safety grounds. The banking remains in situ but has been unused since 1962 and chicanes were built in 1972 after further accidents.

The circuit is located 9 miles north west of Milan.
