Hockenheim was opened in 1929 as a five-mile track composed of two long straights with a corner at either end used by Mercedes for testing. In 1966 one end was foreshortened by the construction of a motorway, resulting in the twisty 'Stadium Complex'.

The circuit is 55 miles south of Frankurt and 15 miles south of Heidelberg.
