2001 World Endurance Championship Standings: |
|
The Race24 Trophy: Daddy or Chips?
All the official coverage of the World Endurance Series has been focussed into two separate areas; the World Championship for WSB class bikes, and World Cup for SuperProduction machines. We thought this would be missing one of the most interesting aspects of this year's racing - which is quickest; a production bike with Ohlins forks and quick change wheels, or a detuned WSB racer? Points for the Race24 Trophy were awarded on the basis of overall race finish position rather than class position. Completely unofficial, but much more fun... Final Standings: 1st 11 Suzuki-Castrol Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 207 2nd 94 GMT 94 Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 147 3rd 1 Phase One Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 130 4th 2 Zongshen Team (A) Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 108 5th 12 Free Bike Yamaha R7 (WSB) 84 6th 9 Wim Motors Honda SP-1 (WSB) 82 7th 111 Honda - Elf Honda SP-W (WSB) 80 8th 22 Police Nationale Kawasaki ZX9R (STK) 76 9th 72 Junior Team LMS Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 57 10th 38 Endurance Moto 38 Yamaha R1 (SPR) 54 11th 35 Moto Shop 35 Kawasaki ZX7RR (WSB) 38 12th= 41 Motomax/Derbi Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 36 12th= 3 Zong Shen Team (B) Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 36 14th 8 Bolliger Team Kawasaki ZX7RR (WSB) 35 15th 34 Bergmann & Sohne Suzuki GSX-R1000 (SPR) 31 Other Brits: 49th= 21 Dynotech Honda Fireblade (STK) 5 57th= 88 GB Moto Yamaha R1 (SPR) 2 SPR=SuperProduction, WSB=Superbike, STK=Stocksport Suzuki Castrol were consistently good; points scored at every race they entered. GMT94 gave them a good chase, but only finished in front of Castrol Suzuki once. Zong Shen went well in the shorter races, while Phase One's performance finally kicked in at the end of the season. Sixth placed Wim won their championship, as did eighth placed Police Nationale. Below the top ten it all gets very close; Motomax/Derbi only had half a season to get their 12th place. Dynotech were the top scoring Fireblade, and GB Moto the fifth highest placed R1 team. Suzuki's GSX-R1000 might have been expected to be more dominant, but if you take out the factory backed bikes and individual championship winners from the top 15, all that's left (apart from big GSX-Rs) is Endurance Moto38, Moto Shop 35 and Bolliger; all endurance stalwarts who could probably get a decent result with a shopping trolley over 24 hours... The official World Endurance Championship will follow the Race24 Trophy format next year. Wonder where they got that idea? |

FIM Endurance World Championship (WSB class):
The official world championship for bikes tuned to WSB specifications. Virtually meaningless now that most of the top teams have defected to the SuperProduction class. Final Standings: 1st - 9 Wim Motors Honda SP-1 182 points 2nd - 12 FreeBike Yamaha R7 130 points 3rd - 111 Honda Elf Honda SP-1 100 points 4th - 7 Ducateam Ducati 996 92 points 5th - 6 Herman Verboven Suzuki GSX-R750 91 points Other Brits: 23rd - 27 Bikeshire Racing Suzuki GSX-R750 25th - 29 Morgan Read & Sharman Ducati 996 29th - 60 Team Alf's Ducati 996 |

FIM Endurance World Cup (SuperProduction class):
Presented as less prestigious than the World Championship, the SuperProduction World Cup has grabbed the imagination of the "permanent" teams and is arguably more competitive than the WSB class championship. Final Standings: 1st - 11 Suzuki Castrol GSX-R1000 222 points 2nd - 94 GMT94 GSX-R1000 177 points 3rd - 2 Zongshen 'A' GSX-R1000 150 points 4th - 1 Whirley Phase One GSX-R1000 132 points 5th - 38 Endurance Moto 38 Yamaha R1 90 points Other Brits: 8th - 41 Motomax/Derbi Suzuki GSX-R 67 points 15th - 88 GB Moto Yamaha R1 21 points 19th - 42 Bike Torque Suzuki GSX-R 17 points 27th - 27 Bikeshire Racing Yamaha R1 10 points |

FIM Endurance Cup (Stocksport class):
Stocksport class; Untuned engines - stock chassis, suspension, wheels and brakes. Should be cheap racing but the Police Nationale bike (moving up to SuperProd next year) was always suspiciously fast. Final Standings: 1st - 22 Police Nationale Kawasaki ZX9R 192 points 2nd - 23 Jet Endurance Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 124 points 3rd - 47 Bridgestone Bikers Profi Suzuki GSX-R 108 points Other Brits: 18th - 21 Dynotech Performance Honda Fireblade 39th - 55 Trackdaze.co.uk 'B' Yamaha R1 44th - 54 Trackdaze.co.uk 'A' Yamaha R1 48th - 32 US/GB Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 50th - 27 Bikeshire Racing Yamaha R1 |
