Top Teams: SERT, YART, Phase 1, GMT94, Bolliger, Moto38

Best of the Millennium – No Matter How You Count – Probably...

The top six World Endurance teams of the 21st century are:

  • 1st SERT Suzuki
  • 2nd Yamaha Austria
  • 3rd Phase One Endurance
  • 4th GMT94
  • 5th Bolliger Team Switzerland
  • 6th Endurance Moto 38

Beyond the top six, it all depends on how you count, where you start counting from, and what you include, or don't include.

This all started when a Yamaha Austria supporter sent in a table showing that YART were the second highest points scoring team of the last five years (2004 to 2008 inclusive), behind SERT Suzuki but ahead of Phase One.

  • 2004-2008: Last Five Years 2004 to 2008: The last five years

This got us wondering which teams were the best during the run of “unified” championships, in which all teams from all classes raced against each other for a single championship. For the six years between 2002 and 2007, the top six teams stayed in the same order, but Zongshen 1 and 2 and the Phase One Junior Team popped into the top ten.

2002-2007: Six 'Unified' Years 2002 to 2007: the six 'Unified' years

An impressive achievement for Zongshen considering that the Chinese teams were only competing in the full championship for two of those six years. Diablo and the Phase One Juniors only competed for five of the six years, and SERT for four years.

And just for completeness, we added the 2008 Race24 Trophy (all teams from all classes competing for a single set of points) results to this chart; no change to the top 8 but Diablo pass the Phase One Juniors to take ninth place.

2002-2008: All Time, So Far... 2002 to 208: The best of all time, so far...

We also tried adding the points from the 2001 Race24 Trophy; the only real change was Yamaha Austria slipping behind Phase One and GMT94, and Police Nationale jumping up to ninth place with HRC Honda in tenth. Before 2001 championship points were awarded to riders rather than teams.

Agree? Disagree? Tell us what you think...

    Note about the charts:

The points for 2008 are “Race24 Trophy” points, not FIM championship points as the FIM don't count the Superstock teams any more.

Where possible, we've traced teams through changes of name. So we've added Suzuki Sweden's 2007 points to Fagersjo-el.se's points from previous years,we've lumped all the top factory Honda teams (Cabin, Seven Stars, Dream, etc.) under the single HRC banner, and we've attempted to follow the twists and turns of the various RT / No Limits incarnations over the years.

If we've missed any teams that have scored more than 120 points over the last five to seven years, we apologise. Let us know, and we'll add them in.
