Barcelona 24 Hour: Suzuki Català Take Race Win BMW HP2 Sport Fifth, one Ducati and one KTM Finish... The Barcelona 24 Hour race (“Les 24 Hores Frigo de Motociclisme") has been won by the No.3 Formula WEC Suzuki GSX-R1000 Català of Javier Oliver, Quique Hernández, Felipe López-Cordoba and Martín Port.
The No.26 Bruno Performance Suzuki was second (first in the SBK class) and the No.33 Team Endurance Yamaha YZF-R1 was third overall and first in SuperStock. The winning team's Martin Port is the first Australian to win the race, and this is also the first victory for his team mates. The winning bike completed 720 laps, about 3403 km, but failed to beat the record of 731 laps set in 2003 because of two pace car sessions.
The fastest lap of the race was set by Ivan Silva on the No..8 Ducati 1198R on lap 230 (about 9 hours into the race) with a time of 1:49’.296 at 155.7 km/h (a new record). The Mossos d'Escuadra (police team) on another Yamaha R1 finished fourth after Team 33 passed them in the final two hours. The French team were the fastest during the last hours, riding almost at the times they set on Saturday! Masters!
BMW Busquets BMW HP2 Sport
The No.27 BMW HP2 Sport of BMW Busquets was fifth overall and third the in SBK class. This is the first time that a BMW has finished on the rostrum First time that BMW has finished on the rostrum in Montmeló. An outstanding performance and a perfect race for the team run by '60s rider Josep Maria Busquets. Ducati No.8 retired from the race after 9 hours with clutch problems, and the No.4 Folch Yamaha abandoned at 5:00am after a crash by Vallcaneras on the final corner totally destroyed the bike. The No.2 Suzuki Català retired while leading the race after a crash by Lozano. Damian Rowley was riding for the No.41 MCS Suzuki. They worked they up to 7th place after 6 hours before fuel pump failure left the team pushing in, dropping them to 20th. A couple of hours later their engine failed and they were forced to retire from the race just after 1:00am. One of the KTM RC8's finished in 33rd place, the other was “not classified” after stopping just before the 13 hour mark. The only Ducati to finish was the No.65 Ducati 848 of Remon, Font, Llorens and Guzman in 9th place Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a big thank you to Mark from the Race24 Message Board for his regular updates and links to more photos.
