Gaureschi Moto Guzzi takes overall win – Sweatshop Phase One P&M Suzukis take first and second in class, ahead of Roadrunner Suzuki – Neate, Alf's, etc, DNF – Live Timing system also DNFs – Confusion reigns
The Gauracing Factory Team Moto Guzzi – ridden by former SBK competitor Vito Guareschi and his brother Gianfranco - won yesterday's Imoal 4 Hour Classic endurance race, ahead of the two Sweatshop Phase One P&M Suzukis, with Roadrunner Team in fourth place overall.
Because the Moto Guzzi was not running in the European Classic Series, first place in the championship points scoring positions went to Phase One No.3 with Phase One No.4 second and Roadrunner team third.
The race had been closely fought between Alf's Kawasaki, Neate Racing Honda, Team Force Suzuki, the Guaracing Guzzi and the two Phase One bikes. Neate Racing lead for much of the first three hours but pulled out with an electrical fault. Alf's Kawasaki suffered an engine failure (although Mike Edwards put in the fastest lap of the race) and both SCERT Suzuki and Team Forrce also retired.
By the end of the race the Moto Guzzi's ability to run longer stints put it into the lead behind the gaggle of championship contenders. This race also saw a greater than usual number of 'wild cards' figuring well in the eventual finishing order, showing the Italian classic endurance teams really know their stuff.
The online Live Timing system failed during the race and we are still awaiting official confirmation of the results so please bear with us.
