Osch 8H: Second Qualifying Update

Light Night - Wet Morning - Hot Gossip...

Night Practice

Last night's first night qualifying session started before sunset, in conditions that could not really be described as "dark". For Phase One's Graeme Gowland this would be his first experience of night racing, so the team chose to sit out the first session.

Osch 8 Hour, Night Practice 1 'Night' finally arrives during Night Practice 1

Yamaha Austria were quickest in Night Practice 1, with a time 0f 1:28.481. SERT Suzuki (1:29.225) were second, Kawasaki France (1:30.476) third, Bolliger (1:30.616) fourth and Maco Moto (1:30.649) fifth. Wildcard team - and German Championship leaders - Holzhauer Honda were sixth on 1:30.902.

The second night practice session saw the same teams in a slightly different order; Kawasaki France (1:29.488) were first, followed by SERT Suzuki, YART, Maco Moto and Bolliger. Phase One were sixth fastest on 1:31.800.

Second Qualifying Sessions

This morning looked set to be a repeat of yesterday's hot and dry weather, but within minutes of the first riders heading out on track for the second qualifying sessions, the heavens opened and torrential rain began to pound down on the track.

Pirelli are good in intermediate conditions, apparently. These aren't intermediate conditions. Pirelli, singing in the rain?

Very few riders in the first group and only a handful from the second group ventured out onto the track. Conditions had improved for the third riders, but not enough for them to improve on yesterday's times. Phase One's Scarnato only arrived this morning so the pressure is on him to post a good time on the drying track.

Are we there yet Yamaha Deutschland's Nina Prinz, waiting...

Erwin Wilding

Former World Endurance Championship competitor Erwin Wilding is at Oschersleben this weekend, still on the road to recovery from his accident several years ago but enjoying being back at an endurance race. More to follow when we catch up with him properly.

KTM: Factory or Dealer Team, depending...

Word in pitlane is that the two KTM RC8s entered for the 8 hour race are factory supported rather than being the simple "Dealer Team" listed on the official entry. Their official status will apparently depend on their performance in the race; top ten and they're a factory team, DNF and they're just some ruffians who've bought an orange bike to go racing.

Pitlane Speed Limit

The pitlane speedlimit at Oschersleben extends past what appears to be the end of pitlane, ending just before the riders rejoin the track. All the riders were caught out by this anomaly yesterday, as they accelerated up to speed after passing what they thought was the end of the restricted zone. Race organiser Ottmar Bange is considering awarding the entire grid a 30 second Stop/Go penalty just before the start of the race tomorrow…
