Suzuka 8 Hour Race Report Yoshimura No.34 Wins Suzuka 8 Hour The Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 of Kagayama and Akiyoshi has won the 30th Suzuka 8 Hour race, beating Honda's ten year run of race victories. The last non-Honda to win the race was the Yamaha of Edwards and Haga in 1996. Suzuki's last 8 Hour win was with the GS1000 of Moineau and Hubin in 1983. SERT Suzuki now lead the championship standings with 72 points. Kawasaki France are in second place on 47 points. Congratulations to all 59 teams who finished. Kagayama and Akiyoshi celebrate their victory on the Suzuka Podium. Fujio Yoshimura looks on.
Hour 7 Summary No34 Yoshi is one lap clear of the chasing pack, but 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place are all on the same lap. SERT Suzuki have passed FCC TSR Eurosport and pulled a lap clear. The only points scoring bike ahead of these two is the FCC TSR No.788 in third place. Phase One are two laps clear of Bolliger but one lap down on the Zoil Trickstar Kawasaki in front of them. Diablo have slipped back to within reach of Moto38 and RMT21, and Amadeus X One have slipped down to 43rd place, just ahead of Yamaha Austria. Hour 6 Summary No change at the top of the field, but the Yoshi Suzuki is within a few seconds of lapping the second palced Honda. SERT have closed to within 13 seconds of FCC TSR Eurosport after having been a lap down for the last few hours. Amadeus X One have climbed up the field to 36th place, in front of Zone Rouge. Yamaha Austria are up to 44th (12th in the points) on 146 laps. Hour 5 Summary The top five seem to be stabilising; it'll be a real coup for Yoshimura (and Suzuki) to win the Suzuka 8 hour if they can hold off the challenge from Checa and Okada who are just under a lap behind. Diablo are also making an excellent showing, climbing steadily and reeling in Bolliger and Phase One. Yamaha Austria are up to 50th place, on 120 laps. Hour 4 Summary No.33 Honda moves up to second place with FCC TSR third. SERT are holding 10th just behind FCC TSR Eurosport. Yamaha Austria slip further to 54th place but with 95 laps completed they seem to be starting their climb back. Hour 3 Summary Yamaha Austria drop to 41st place with 75 laps. Hour 2 Summary The HRC No.11 Honda of Toseland and Kiyonari stopped circulating just after the first hour. Hour 1 Summary La Bellezza Ducati are one of the first casualties, and the favoured No.21 Yamaha has already lost 7 laps.
