Championship: Wide Open

Kawasaki France have proved conclusively that they can match and beat SERT Suzuki.

SERT returned to the full championship in 2004 and have been totally dominant for the last two seasons. Yamaha Austria, Yamaha Phase One and Kawasaki Bolliger have all worked hard to challenge them but with little ultimate effect.

This year looks like being very different. SERT lead the championship standings by just one point having been comprehensively beaten on track at Albacete.

Championship Standings: Top 5

  • 1: Suzuki Endurance Racing Team 1 - Suzuki GSX-R1000 - 48 points
  • 2: Kawasaki Motor France - Kawasaki ZX10R - 47 points
  • 3: Suzuki Endurance Racing Team 2 - Suzuki GSX-R1000 - 35 points
  • 4: Yamaha Austria Racing Team - Yamaha YZF-R1 - 22 points
  • 5: Yamaha GMT94 - Yamaha YZF-R1 - 18 points

Just as significantly, Yamaha Austria and Yamaha Phase One have both shown that they can match SERT's lap times during race conditions; not just while the Suzuki is holding a comfortable lead but while it is pushing hard in second place. This is going to be a great season.

    FCC TSR: Impressive

Albacete welcomed the first Japanese endurance team to travel to Europe for many years. The FCC TSR squad - who took pole position and the race win at Suzuka last year - put in a brilliant performance to finish sixth at Albacete.

Anyone who has seen how out-of-depth the best European teams can appear at Suzuka will understand how impressive that result is. Travelling halfway round the world to race on an unfamiliar circuit, in uncertain weather and with limited resources, while struggling with jet-lag and an alien culture is never going to be easy first time round. To qualify fourth and finish sixth is a real achievement.

Tsujimura on the FCC TSR Fireblade

We've since found out that the mother of FCC TSR's lead rider Takeshi Tsujimura was taken seriously ill and passed away during the race. He was informed of her condition by the hospital in Japan during the race but chose not to share his grief with the team until the race was over. Our thoughts are with him and his family.

    Spanish Riders: Circuit Specialists

The key to success at Albacete might well involve local knowledge. Three of the top four finishers had at least one Spanish rider. Kawasaki France ran just two riders in the race, Steve Plater backing up Julian Mazuecos, and QERT Kawasaki did the same with Cardosa and Silva sharing the riding during the race. Folch Endurance are well known circuit specialists, and only SERT Suzuki didn't field a local for this race.

    Next Race: Long Wait

It's twelve long weeks until the next round of the championship, the Suzuka 8 Hour race in Japan. Points earned at Suzuka always prove vital; never more so than this year. A lot is going to hinge on the support that the top teams receive for the race; not only in terms of motorcycle development but also logistics and - perhaps most importantly - tyre availability and support.
